Our Cooperative Approach

Our grooming philosophy is built on the principle of cooperation. This means we:

- Listen to your dog's body language: We pay close attention to their signals and adjust our approach accordingly.
- Go at their pace: We don't rush the process and allow your dog time to feel comfortable.
- Give them a sense of control: Where possible, we offer choices and involve them in the process.
- Focus on building trust: We aim to create a positive association with grooming through gentle handling and positive reinforcement.

How It Works: A Tailored and Flexible Process

Our mobile grooming service is carefully designed for your dog's individual needs and comfort. Here's a more detailed look at what you can expect:

1. The Essential Meet & Treat: This initial consultation allows us to meet your dog, assess their needs and discuss your specific goals. It's an opportunity for us to meet in a relaxed environment and for us to determine if our cooperative approach is the best fit.

2. Personalized Grooming Sessions : Each grooming session is carefully tailored to your dog's individual needs and comfort level. This means we may need to be flexible and adapt our approach during each visit.

- Prior Behaviour Modification: For some dogs, particularly those with significant anxiety or negative past experiences with grooming, behaviour modification may be necessary before we can begin standard grooming tasks. This may involve dedicated desensitization and trust-building sessions. These sessions focus on gradually introducing your dog to grooming tools, handling, and the overall process in a positive and controlled way, using rewards and positive reinforcement. The goal is to help your dog feel safer and more comfortable. These sessions are part of the journey towards successful grooming and will be discussed and planned collaboratively.

- Breaking Down Tasks: We often break down grooming tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, allowing your dog to become accustomed to each part of the process before moving on.

- Modifying Grooms: Even during regular grooming sessions, we may need to adjust techniques, focus on specific areas, or take breaks depending on your dog's cues and tolerance. Our priority is always to proceed at a pace that minimizes stress.

- Incorporating Basic Training: Throughout the grooming process, we continuously use positive reinforcement, gentle handling, and trust-building techniques to create positive associations.

3. Convenient House Call Grooming: We bring our professional grooming setup directly to your home, eliminating the stress of travel for your dog. Easy access to parking near your property and quiet, safe space to work is required. After grooming grooming we ensure to thoroughly cleaned-up any hair or mess.

4. Our Partnership with You: Cooperative grooming thrives on collaboration. Your active involvement is essential for success. This includes:

- Open communication about your dog's history, anxieties, and progress.
- Patience and understanding that building trust takes time.
- Consistency in reinforcing positive experiences and any at-home training we suggest.
- Providing a calm and suitable environment for the grooming session.

Important Note: While our philosophy centers on cooperative grooming and never forcing participation for purely aesthetic reasons, there are specific situations where grooming tasks are essential for a dog's physical health and well-being. These include addressing matting and trimming dangerously overgrown nails. In such cases, while we will always strive to minimize stress and proceed as gently as possible, we may not be able to progress entirely at the dog's preferred pace. Our priority in these situations is to alleviate discomfort and prevent further health issues.

The Mel in Mellow Mutts

Hi, I'm Melanie, the face behind Mellow Mutts. My journey into grooming began in 2018 when I qualified as a Level 3 groomer. Honing my skills in busy salon environments, I became increasingly aware of the challenges faced by nervous and uncooperative dogs. Driven to find solutions, I dedicated myself to studying dog behaviour, which led me to the transformative power of cooperative grooming and the crucial role of a dog's sense of control in feeling safe during the process. This understanding now forms the heart of my cooperative grooming service.
